Tennessee Medical Association honors Ferrell
Craig Ferrell, M.D., professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has received the Tennessee Medical Association’s Distinguished Service Award.

Given annually since 1963, the award is presented to exemplary members of the association for notable achievements. The TMA cited Ferrell’s “substantial efforts in raising the bar in equestrian safety and his unwavering support for adults with special needs.”
A founder of the Vanderbilt Bone & Joint clinic, Ferrell also serves as medical chairman for the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI), the world governing body for equestrian sports, and as physician for the U.S. Olympic equestrian team. Partnering with Riders4Helmets, he has championed widespread helmet use in equestrian sports.
Ferrell is also former chairman and current board member of Brightstone, a Franklin-based organization that provides comprehensive work and a social community for adults with special needs in Middle Tennessee.
“I am honored, but I am certain there are more deserving recipients of this recognition. As physicians we are privileged to be influential citizens in our communities. Volunteer service, for me, has been a most enjoyable aspect of my medical career,” Ferrell said.
Subhi Ali, M.D., and Nashville Mayor Karl Dean were also recognized with awards, which will be presented at TMA’s 17th annual meeting on April 14.
