Thompson on state nursing board
Arthur Thompson, L.P.N., a nurse in Vanderbilt's Neurology Clinic, has been appointed to the Tennessee State Board of Nursing.
The board is made up of nursing professionals from across the state and is charged with safeguarding the health, safety and welfare of citizens by overseeing nursing licensure and practice regulations.
“I wanted to have a voice to help make a change for the better. I wanted to see what I could do to make a difference,” Thompson said. “It's something I've always wanted to do, and I can now look back and say ‘I've done my best.’”
Thompson, who will serve until September 2013, is one of three licensed practical nurses on the board. It also includes five registered nurses, two advanced practice nurses and one member not professionally associated with health care.
Marilyn Dubree, M.S.N., R.N., executive chief Nursing Officer, also serves on the board.
“This is a wonderful honor for Arthur and for Vanderbilt University Medical Center to have him represent licensed practical nursing on the Tennessee Board of Nursing,” Dubree said. “Arthur's experience in nursing and commitment to patients will serve him and the board incredibly well.”
Thompson has been at VUMC for 35 years. His first assignment was in the Neurology and Orthopaedics Unit in Medical Center North.
He helped open the first Neuro step-down unit there, and moved with Neurology to 11 South in Vanderbilt University Hospital. In 1999, he took up his post in the Neurology Clinic.
