Andrews, a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, is internationally known for her contributions to the field of mammalian iron homeostasis, including iron deficiency and genetic hemochromatosis.

She also is vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and professor of Pediatrics, Pharmacology and Cancer Biology at Duke. Her lecture, entitled “Forging an understanding of iron homeostasis,” will begin at 4 p.m. in Light Hall, room 208.

Andrews is the fifth winner of the Vanderbilt Prize in Biomedical Science.
The prize, established in 2006, honors women who have made significant advances in the biological and biomedical sciences and who have contributed positively to the mentorship of other women in science. It includes a $25,000 award to Andrews and names a Vanderbilt Prize Student Scholar who is a woman in the early phase of graduate training.

This year's Vanderbilt Prize Student Scholar is Emily Anderson, a third-year Ph.D. student who is working in the laboratory of Alyssa Hasty, Ph.D., associate professor and director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics.

Anderson “is a stellar student, through and through,” Hasty wrote in her nomination letter. “I see a fire in Emily to learn and to discover. I have absolutely no doubt (she) will make important contributions during her time in my group and throughout the rest of her career.”
