Wise to lead national colorectal cancer group

Wise, assistant professor of Surgery in the Division of General Surgery, specializes in colon and rectal surgery with an interest in colorectal and gastrointestinal cancers.
He is also the director of the Vanderbilt Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Registry, which was established in 2006 to serve as a resource for patients and their family members by offering cancer screenings and surveillance recommendations for high-risk individuals.
“This is a great honor for Dr. Wise and for Vanderbilt surgery. It recognizes his expertise in the genetics of colorectal cancer and his leadership abilities,” said Kenneth W. Sharp, M.D., chief of the Division of General Surgery.
The CGA was established in 1995 to improve understanding of the basic science of inherited colorectal cancer, as well as the clinical management of the disease.
The group takes a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the study of colorectal cancer by including both medical practitioners as well as non-clinical experts from areas, including epidemiology, genetics, statistics and basic science.
Wise joined Vanderbilt in 2004. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, served his residency at Vanderbilt, and completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery from Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes/Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
