Donald Brady, M.D., senior associate dean for Graduate Medical Education and Continuing Professional Development, has been named to the board of directors of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for a three-year term.
The ACGME, one of the largest private accrediting agencies in the world, oversees the accreditation of residency and clinical fellowship programs in the United States as well as many internationally.
“ACGME currently accredits all allopathic training programs in the United States and is moving to a single accreditation system that will include osteopathic training programs as well,” Brady said. “The organization sets the standards which define graduate medical education in the U.S.
“Being on the front lines, working directly with students and residents on the general medicine wards, and spending time talking with residents from all disciplines as they prepare to be physicians in the independent practice of medicine, will allow me to share those experiences with other board members,” he added.
“I hope to be able to utilize what I learn as a board member to help Vanderbilt as we strive continually to improve our own programs in an evolving health care system.”
Brady is the first Vanderbilt representative on the ACGME Board.
“We are delighted that Donald has been chosen to serve on the ACGME Board,” said Bonnie Miller, M.D., senior associate dean for Health Sciences Education at Vanderbilt. “It’s a perfect opportunity for him to share his expertise and to have a national impact on residency education.”
The ACGME is responsible for the accreditation of approximately 9,500 residency education programs.
