Pets of VUMC 2018 — Collection #1: Duos

The contest that’s on everybody’s mind.

Brenda Capers, Vanderbilt Health Services. Copper and Skittle. “Copper is our failed foster-rescue.  He’s six years old and is a lab mix. Skittle is a pineapple green cheek conure.  She hatched in September, 2017.”

Almost 600 (!) photographs were submitted by VUMC employees to the 2018 “VUMC Voice” Pet Photo Contest, and this collection is the first of the selected pictures to be shared. (Remember — the top prize we offer in the contest is a photo of your pet shared in “VUMC Voice.”)

Looking over the many, many images people sent in, it is really obvious that Medical Center people LOVE their pets. There are so many shots that are cute, goofy, cozy and lovable — sometimes all at once.

So, we were faced with a deep question — with so many great pet pictures, how can we show as many of them as possible?

Here’s what we decided: some of the entries fell into natural categories, so over the course of the coming weeks, we will post different collections of selected pictures based around themes.

The theme for this first collection of photos is “Duos.” Watch for more collections in coming weeks. While we won’t be able to use all, or even most, of the pictures we received, we hope to showcase a good sample of the best of the beasts.

If you didn’t send in an entry this year, and your pet is peeved at you about it, please reassure him or her that there will be a “VUMC Voice” Pet Photo Contest next year, but explain that the deadline for entries for this year has passed, and no more pictures will be accepted. We hope your pet understands.

And watch for the next installment of “VUMC Voice” Pets of VUMC 2018 — coming in May.

Kim Lovell, Health Policy. Sinan (son) and Sofya (mother) are Burmese cats. “They are incredibly cuddly, sleep underneath the covers like humans, and have even been known to steal the hearts of self-proclaimed dog people.”
Kim Miller, Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital. Franklin and Millie are mixed breeds who came to me from shelters. They love to play fetch, do tricks, and cuddle.
David Crenshaw, Institute for Medicine and Public Health. Darla and Bozon are fully recovered after their surgeries and are happy healthy pups. They were strays who showed up in the neighborhood on Easter Sunday, eight years ago. They never stray far from each other.
Erin Bergner, Center for Health Behavior and Health Education. Lola and Hank.

Dianna Cullison, Information Technology. Sadie and Maya.

Grace Amerman, Hearing and Speech Sciences. “Louie, back, and Lola are pit bulls. Don’t let Louie’s 85 lb. body fool you — he loves to sit on your lap and is terrified of the chihuahua next door. Lola could possibly be mixed with bunny rabbit because she can clear a 6-foot fence and always has one ear up and one ear down.”
Jenny Frampton, Transition Management Office. Sonny and Rocky.
Jeffery Fizer, Quality, Safety and Risk Prevention. Hank the pit bull and Daniel the kitty enjoy naps together.
Louise Hanson, Clinical Medicine. Winnie and Paco, both adopted from the Humane Society 6 years ago. “Winnie calmly sits in the sunshine watching Paco dig up the yard in the never-ending hound quest for prey that is never caught.”
Alana Hutcherson, Health IT. Zuzu and Dixie.
Michelle Payne, Strategic Marketing. Boxers Harley and Bailey get ready for the eclipse.

Jamie Hall, Pharmacy. “Dakota is a husky mix, 4 years old, and Lucky is a Lab mix, 7 years old.”
Melinda New, Obstetrics and Gynecology. Philly and Avery.

Betsy DeMarcus, Anesthesiology. Mike and Molly— brother and sister, adopted at the age of 7 after their previous owner had to move into a nursing home.
Kris Heaton, Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute. Baya and Ivy.
Kerry Hankins, Hearing and Speech Sciences. Daisy and Stanley.
Kelsey Tomasek, Cardiovascular Medicine. Louie and Henry.

Beth Berman, Neurology. Lucky and Brownie enjoying a sunny day at Two Rivers Dog Park.
Buffy Krauser Lupear, Anesthesiology. Sophie, an Irish setter, golden retriever and standard poodle mix, and Bernie, a St. Bernard and standard poodle mix, doing what they love to do most: riding in the truck.
