The chair of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, Ajit Pai, recently visited Allen County Schools in Kentucky to see a demonstration of the new school-based telemedicine program. The initiative, a partnership between the school district and Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, allows children with minor illnesses or injuries to receive health care services while attending school through virtual visits with Vanderbilt clinicians. A gift from Laura Jo and Wayne Dugas, the Cal Turner Family Foundation and the James Stephen Turner Family Foundation made the initiative possible. Pictured here, Kate Carlson, MD, sits in the telemedicine conference room at Children’s Hospital and demonstrates the program for Pai, who was videoconferencing live from the middle school in Scottsville, Kentucky. Drew Flowers, senior project manager for Vanderbilt Telehealth, facilitated the visit and was also present at the Scottsville school.
