As announced in a previous VUMC Reporter article, Box content will begin migrating individual content to OneDrive for Business and organizational content to SharePoint Online with a target completion date of May 2023. This effort is a cost saving initiative and an organizational priority.
All accounts will be moved out of Box by June 2023.
The Box Migration initiative will:
- Reduce operational cost to the organization.
- Consolidate day-to-day collaboration content.
- Increase operational efficiency by reducing the number of collaboration tools.
Box content will be moving in two phases:
- Phase 1 will focus on moving organizational folders to SharePoint Online.
- Phase 2 will focus on moving individual Box accounts to OneDrive for Business.

Who will be impacted by the Box Content Migration:
- Box account owners – Users who have a VUMC Box account with or without content.
- External collaborators – Users who have access to content but are not a part of VUMC.
What to expect:
Researchers who require content to stay in Box will need to fund the expense from a grant. Access to Box services for researchers will be managed through the Software Store starting in fiscal year 2024.
VUMC workforce members who must access content in another organization’s Box account will be provided instructions on safely using free individual Box accounts.
To prepare for migration activities, Box users (and their leaders) will receive:
- An announcement communication.
- A survey to gather data on existing Box content.
- Migration confirmation communications.
