The National Resident Match Program (NRMP) reports that this year’s Match — the process of matching the preferences of applicants for U.S. residency positions with the preferences of residency program directors — was the largest in NRMP’s 70-year history with a record number 42,952 applicants who certified a rank order list and 40,375 certified positions.

Among those who matched on Friday, March 17, were 102 members of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine graduating class. Twenty-two VUSM medical students will stay at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for residency, and seven will stay for their preliminary year before going elsewhere for residency. Seven couples entered the Match together.

Helen Gambrah and Lihua Shu were supported on stage by family members as they happily announced that they matched to the University of Michigan for urology and internal medicine, respectively.

This year, 18 students, a higher-than-average number, will graduate with both MD and PhD degrees as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program.

Courtney Edwards has been at Vanderbilt for seven years in the MSTP. She thanked her PhD adviser, Rachelle Johnson, PhD. “She has been a great role model and has made me a better scientist,” said

Edwards, who opened her Match envelope on stage in Langford Auditorium in front of her classmates, faculty, and friends and family. Edwards announced that she will be continuing her training at Johns Hopkins.

A higher-than-usual number of students, seven, are entering the field of psychiatry. Diagnostic radiology also had a strong showing with nine students entering residency programs across the country, and it was another robust year for anesthesiology with 10 matching into it.

“I find anesthesiology fascinating because it combines diagnostic reasoning and physiology with the ability to work in a fast-paced OR or ICU environment, and there is such variety in what you can do after residency,” said fourth-year medical student Annmarie Mede, who matched to the University of California, San Francisco. “In addition to great training, UCSF offers a robust health equity curriculum and serves the diverse populations of the Bay Area, where I grew up.”

Fourth-year students Anna Whitney (pediatrics) and Whitney George (med/peds) will be under the guidance of pediatric residency program director Whitney Browning, MD.

“As a native Nashvillian, I’ve pictured myself working at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt since I first decided to pursue medicine many years ago. Finding out that I get to train here is a dream come true,” said Anna Whitney.

The breakdown of Match specialties for residency is: Anesthesiology: 10; Emergency Med: 5; Family Medicine: 1; Internal Medicine: 18; Interventional Radiology: 1; Medicine/Pediatrics: 2; Neurological Surgery: 3; OB/GYN: 4; Ophthalmology: 4; Orthopaedic Surgery: 4; Otolaryngology: 3; Pathology: 3; Pediatrics: 7; Plastic Surgery (Integrated): 2; Psychiatry: 5; Medicine/psychiatry 1;  Pediatrics/psychiatry/child psychiatry: 1;  Radiology-Diagnostic: 9;  Interventional Radiology: 1; Radiation Oncology: 1; Surgery-General: 2 ; Urology: 3; Child Neurology: 2.

“I am always amazed by our students,” said senior associate dean for Medical Student and Alumni Affairs, Amy Fleming, MD, MScHPE. “They came to Vanderbilt to pursue their dreams of serving others as physicians, scientists, advocates and innovators, and they have matched into top programs across the United States. It was an incredible Match again this year, and I am thrilled to continue to watch our students as they broaden their impact through residency training and beyond.”
