The diagnostic laboratories at Vanderbilt University Medical Center are more than doubling their footprint with a new 110,000-square-foot facility. This project, which will be completed in March, 2024, will meet the growing need for lab services, positively impact countless Vanderbilt patients who depend on rapid in-house testing, help to improve the clinician experience, and lay the groundwork for the future growth of the health system.
The laboratories support the needs of the VUMC inpatient hospitals and the outpatient enterprise. The laboratories currently include a main laboratory on the fourth floor of The Vanderbilt Clinic and several satellite laboratories throughout the VUMC system.
“Our current lab opened in 1988, and the institution has grown dramatically since that time. Our expanded footprint creates the capacity to bring more testing to VUMC, to deploy innovative technology, to improve patient care, and enhance our team’s working environment,” said Alice Coogan, MD, Chair of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology
The new laboratory space is located in Nashville’s MetroCenter district, five miles north of the VUMC main campus. Once complete, the new lab will offer an expanded test menu supporting both routine and specialized testing, which will enhance service levels for our patients.
The current lab at The Vanderbilt Clinic will undergo renovations and remain focused on near-patient testing, including surgery, inpatient, and Emergency Department needs.
