General pediatrics, the largest primary care clinic at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, is moving to Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks.

The first patient visit will be on Sept. 17.

Why the move?

  • A 21,000-patient roster
  • 50,000 visits annually
  • 200 patient visits daily
  • Nearly 60 same-day appointments a day

Growth.

The clinic, Vanderbilt Children’s Primary Care, is expanding from 20,000 square feet to 29,000 with the addition of 13 exam rooms, dedicated consult areas, a checkout area to allow for specialty service scheduling and a devoted learning space for the nearly 80 resident staff members.

“We have outgrown our space,” said Tom Young, clinic manager for General Pediatrics. “There is so much we are excited about with this move — the increase in our clinical efficiency, the ability to provide more resources to our families through our case managers, social workers and resource specialists and patient family satisfaction.

“It’s very important that we meet our patients and families where they are and not just pay attention to their medical requirements,” said Young. “Our expansion will assist us in helping fulfill needs within our capability. We have a national certification that designates our clinic to meet specific standards.

“We are patient-centered, a medical home, a one-stop shop. It’s a very important descriptor of who we are.”

Nashville is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country. The region’s growth over the last decade has resulted in an influx of people traveling to Monroe Carell for health care needs.

The pediatrics health care arena continues to grow at a rapid rate. As the health care provider to approximately 1,200 newborns a month, Monroe Carell is taking the necessary steps to meet the health care demands of the communities it serves.

After a two-year process, the move will allow for the expansion of several specialty clinics within the Doctors’ Office Tower. General pediatrics is the anchor and the single largest referral source to the specialty clinics at Monroe Carell.

“This expansion is also a great opportunity for updating and transition for a few other clinics,” said Chris Lee, chief operating officer Ambulatory Services at Monroe Carell. “Growth and transition are key themes for our health care enterprise. As a teaching clinic, the new space includes a learning center that reflects our continued dedication to our resident staff.”

The new space will also offer lactation rooms, a spacious break room for staff and a lab space.

The expanded space will also allow for a more consolidated practice module that will see developmental medicine embedded into clinics as well as an integrative psychologist, dermatologist, an ear nose and throat collaboration and a robust research arm.

The new clinic, Vanderbilt Children’s Primary Care One Hundred Oaks, is at 719 Thompson Lane, Suite 30300.  The space is also a nod to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Monroe Carell’s commitment to advancing health equity through primary care.

“Our pediatric primary care clinic is the medical home for some of the most vulnerable children in Nashville,” said Bill Heerman, MD, MPH, associate professor of Pediatrics and chief of the Division of Academic General Pediatrics at Monroe Carell. “We aim to provide the best clinical care, educate the next generation of pediatricians, advance scientific discovery, and advocate for our patients who face tremendous social challenges.

“This new clinic space at One Hundred Oaks will allow us to be leaders in all of these areas for years to come.”
