ESPN documentary chronicles former NBA player and VUMC heart transplant patient Scot Pollard’s journey

Vanderbilt University Medical Center granted ESPN unprecedented access to film former NBA player Scot Pollard’s heart transplant. The resulting documentary about Pollard’s life journey, “Heart of Pearl,” will debut on ESPN on Sunday, June 15, at noon CDT.

As a world leader in advanced cardiac care and organ transplantation, VUMC is committed to raising awareness and educating the public about the lifesaving impact of organ donation.

In early 2024, VUMC’s Heart Transplant Program led the complex process of successfully transplanting a new heart for Pollard. The former professional athlete was critically ill with advanced heart failure.

The documentary chronicles his personal journey as an NBA player and his experience at VUMC — from the initial evaluation for organ transplantation, lifesaving surgery and early days of his recovery.

VUMC is a global leader in heart transplantation, having performed 174 adult and pediatric heart transplants in 2024.
