Women’s health misconceptions; the science behind stuttering; inside a vaccine research lab; plus other news stories with VUMC sources.

C. Buddy Creech, MD, MPH, FPIDS, professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and the director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program, participated in a town hall on kids and vaccines hosted by WKRN. Creech was also quoted by WKRN about a story on vaccine safety. 

William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, was quoted by several news outlets about public health issues, including by NBC News and TODAY (summer COVID cases), HuffPost (COVID tests detecting current variants), Healthline (high rates of tick bites) and Bloomberg (chikungunya virus). 

Becker’s Healthcare quoted Tyler Barrett, MD, chair, Vanderbilt University Faculty Senate; professor of Emergency Medicine; and associate chief medical officer for Compliance, for a story about how academic medical centers are creating and managing split physician-faculty or physician-administrative roles. 

Wei Zheng, MD, PhD, director of the Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center, published a study on the health benefits of walking briskly. Coverage included TIME, BBC Science Focus, The Times, Daily Mail and El Español

Jennifer Piper Below, PhD, professor of Medicine and director of the Vanderbilt Genetics Institute, published a study on the genetic underpinnings of stuttering, which was covered by Technology Networks and Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News.

Fox 17 News interviewed John Trahanas, MD, assistant professor of Cardiac Surgery, about VUMC’s study on a new technique to preserve hearts before transplant. 

James Crowe, Jr., MD, professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center, was interviewed by Nashville Scene for a story about preparing for measles outbreaks. Crowe was also quoted in a story in Science about a method of using dental floss as a needle-free vaccine (Crowe was not involved in the research). 

Douglas Johnson, MD, MSCI, professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, was quoted in a story by the Boston Globe about an experimental cancer treatment. 

The Independent quoted Peter Martin, MD, MSCI professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, about increased rates of alcohol use and liver disease in women. 

MedPage Today interviewed Melissa Kaufman, MD, PhD, Patricia and Rodes Hart Endowed Chair in Urologic Surgery, for a story about the clinical guidelines for Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause.
