From the nomination

“Shane Andrews came to the bedside for a patient of mine today to do a blood draw. This young man is autistic, non-verbal, and has a history of physical and sexual abuse. He was transferred to us by another hospital where he had spent several days in restraints and given IM injections. He was scared, confused and traumatized. I met Shane in the hall outside the room and gave him a brief description of the patient and the things that would likely need to happen for us to be able to safely complete the blood draw. He did not bat an eye.

“He was so kind and willing to be flexible. I cannot adequately describe the gratitude I have for how he approached this patient’s care. He entered the room with me calmly and quietly. He was kind, gentle and patient. At one point, he sat on the floor with me and the patient as he cried and rocked back and forth. Shane gently and carefully tried twice to assess the patient’s veins; each time the patient began to get scared and pull away, Shane stopped, reassured the patient, and told me to take my time trying to help the patient be safe and calm. There was no rush, no irritation, and it was the absolute epitome of trauma-informed, patient-centered care. So, from the bottom of my heart, kudos to Shane.”

About DAISY Awards

The DAISY Award is a recognition for extraordinary nurses who exemplify compassion toward patients and families.

Vanderbilt Health distributes the award in partnership with The DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 1999 to honor the memory of J. Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old man who died of complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Barnes’ family was moved by the care they received from his nurses and wanted to recognize them to preserve his memory. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

Vanderbilt Health nurse committees determine the individual recipients. Previous recipients of the DAISY Award are here. The award is open to all licensed nurses, and anyone can nominate — including co-workers, patients and their families.
