Infectious diseases specialist Anna Person, MD, professor of Medicine and director of Education and Faculty Development in the Division of Infectious Diseases, has been named chair of the board of directors of the HIV Medical Association (HIVMA). Created in 2001 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the HIVMA includes more than 6,000 members.
Quoting Person, the announcement from HIVMA reads, “I feel every day that what I do — caring for underserved populations and focusing on educating the next generation of leaders in the field — matters immensely. … I am committed as chair to working with my fellow board members to increase access to health care services and coverage for people vulnerable to and with HIV, and to sustain and build a robust and culturally competent HIV workforce. With the current unprecedented threats to HIV funding and infrastructure, this is more important than ever.”
Person attended Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and medical school at George Washington University. She did her residency in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center, completing an infectious disease fellowship at Duke in 2010.
Person has served as co-chair of the Health Care Access Working group for HIVMA and served at the Southeast AIDS Education and Training Center as director of Interprofessional Education, helping to shape the HIV curriculum for health care professionals and students in nursing, medicine, dentistry, social work and pharmacy in eight Southeast states.
The Vanderbilt University School of Medicine has recognized Person with the Candle Award and the William Schaffner Teaching Award. She has been inducted into both the Vanderbilt Academy for Excellence in Education and the Vanderbilt Academy for Excellence in Clinical Medicine.
