Vanderbilt Health has again been recognized for leadership in supply chain performance and innovation.
Vanderbilt Health placed 19th in the Gartner Healthcare Supply Chain Top 25 for 2025, released by Gartner Inc., a technology research and consulting firm based in Stamford, Connecticut. Vanderbilt moved up six slots from a 2024 ranking of 25th, to come in above Mass General Brigham, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, New York-Presbyterian, Baylor Scott & White Health, Johns Hopkins Medicine, and CommonSpirit Health. The top position in this year’s ranking was again claimed by AdventHealth, headquartered in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
This is the first year that Vanderbilt Health formally submitted a packet to Gartner outlining the scope, efforts, accomplishments and strategic initiatives of its supply chain. Vanderbilt Health only became eligible to be considered after acquiring regional hospitals, thereby meeting Gartner’s definition of a health system. Last year’s ranking for Vanderbilt Health was based solely on a peer vote and various Vanderbilt supply chain initiatives that had become known within the industry.
“A supply chain in health care is no longer just about acquiring, storing and delivering medical supplies, medication and equipment needed for patient care,” said Vanderbilt Health Chief Supply Chain Officer Teresa Dail, RN. “Supply chains have to be strategically aligned with their organizations — not simply to support patient care, but also to support financial, quality and safety outcomes.”
For the ranking, Gartner evaluates health systems using such measures as financial performance, quality of patient care and environmental sustainability; their methodology combines quantitative metrics with peer assessments from industry leaders to create composite scores for each institution.
“We’re very pleased to receive this recognition from Gartner and our peers,” Dail said. “This is added confirmation that Vanderbilt Health’s supply chain strategy and practices remain on track.
“I am thrilled for our supply chain team members who work tirelessly in this very challenging environment to strive for excellence, and very grateful for the collaboration of our clinical partners.”
The 2025 rankings announcement from Gartner highlighted three major supply chain trends among top-performing health systems: cost management in the face of a volatile global trade market, adoption of artificial intelligence to streamline supply chain processes, and expanding partnerships between clinical and supply chain leaders.
