Trevathan, the Amos Christie Chair in Global Health and professor of Pediatrics and Neurology, will serve a four-year term on the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council (NANDSC). The advisory council meets three times a year to provide guidance to the NINDS director on programming, reviews and reports on intramural and extramural programs.

A pediatric neurologist and epidemiologist, Trevathan, who became VIGH director in 2017, is principal investigator on an NIH-funded 60-site cluster randomized clinical trial in northern Nigeria titled “Bridging the Childhood Epilepsy Treatment Gap in Africa (BRIDGE).” The clinical trial will determine the efficacy of shifting epilepsy care to specially trained community health workers compared to epilepsy care provided by physicians.

“NINDS is the world’s most important funder of cutting-edge research in neurological disorders. I am delighted to serve NINDS by providing advice on future programming and extramural research activities,” said Trevathan.

Trevathan has led major health interventions and research programs in Africa, China and Latin America, and has authored or co-authored more than 100 scientific publications.
