Laura Skaug and Lori Anne Parker-Danley, PhD, are the first recipients of Allied Health’s Dietetic Internship Excellence in Education Awards.
Skaug was recognized for her role as a senior standardized patient educator at VUMC’s Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment. She provides a safe environment where future dietitian nutritionists can augment skills in nutrition-focused physical exams.
Parker-Danley was acknowledged for her educational leadership as director of Patient Education. As a preceptor and workshop facilitator, she trains future practitioners through a health literacy lens with a focus on the teach-back method, motivational interviewing, and formatting education materials.
“Excellence doesn’t happen by accident; it takes ongoing commitment, communication and collaboration. It is our honor to formally recognize the contribution these award recipients make in training the next generation of health care professionals,” said Dianne Killebrew, MEd, RDN, LDN, program director for the dietetic internship.
The Dietetic Internship Award for Excellence in Education recognizes preceptors and other professional development providers who exemplify outstanding leadership in facilitating training programs. The award winners are chosen by dietetic internship faculty members.
These leaders demonstrate effective instruction through design tools that elevate engagement; they exemplify professionalism in the field and cultivate a culture of inclusivity and advocacy to develop well-equipped and educated future dietitian nutritionists.
“Preceptors are instrumental in guiding and teaching allied health professionals. They provide insight during hands-on experiences that will stay with these students for their entire careers. The wisdom our leaders impart is invaluable,” said Peggy Valentine, EdD, Vice President of Allied Health Programs.
“We are incredibly grateful for their commitment, and we are pleased to acknowledge their diligence in teaching.”
