Pets of VUMC 2019 — Collection #4: Smiling dogs, cat rebuttals, horse laughs

If you’re happy and you know it than your tongue will surely show it

This is the fourth installment of photographs submitted by VUMC employees to the 2019VUMC Voice Pet Photo Contest. Hundreds of pictures were submitted for the contest, and while we won’t be able to use all, or even most, of the pictures we received, we hope to showcase a good sample of the best of the beasts.

Remember, the top prize offered in the contest is a photo of your pet in VUMC Voice.

If you missed sending in an entry this year, and your pet is peeved about it, please reassure him or her that there will be a VUMC Voice Pet Photo Contest next year, but explain that the deadline for entries for this year has passed, and no more pictures will be accepted. We hope your pet understands.

Judy Warfield, Pediatric ENT. “Jack is a rescued one-and-a-half-year-old German shepherd/hound mix. He is full of energy and loves to eat dryer sheets.”
Travis Smith, Melrose Support Services. “Jordan is an 11-year-old schnauzer. I’ve been his doggy dad since he was 6 weeks old.”

 

Sherri Tomlinson, Urology. “Bunny is a bichon-shih-tzu mix. She is 11 years old and got her name from, of course, hopping like a bunny.”
Deborah Hunter, Quality Assurance. “Tee-Bo is a mini Australian Shepard. He loves being outside listening to the birds and also loves diving in the water and swimming. He is truly my best friend and goes with me any where that dogs are allowed. This is him with a fresh spring rose from the garden. I had to hold this one to get the picture because he ate the first two.”
Tammy Masnica, Space and Transitions. Bakon the French bulldog. “If you try to play fetch — forget about it He will look at you as if to say ‘are you gonna get that?'”
Stephanie Presnell, Revenue Cycle Analytics. “Ryman is a 3-year-old Labradoodle who is happiest when he’s playing fetch with his ball in the back yard.”
Roy Sohini, Otolaryngology. “Waffle is a 4-year-old Lab.”
Sheelah Blankenship, Health Policy. “Ari’s hobbies include pestering her brother, Max, and playing with her squeaky toys. She’s been such a wonderful addition to the family.”
Sarah Dirkmaat, Vanderbilt Eskind Diabetes Clinic. “Grace is an energetic pup who’s favorite sport is soccer. She is a mixed breed rescued from the streets, and she loves to bark at every person walking by our house.”

Rich Phelps, Data Center Services. “Meet Rocky the 13-year-old red heeler Frisbee-catching superstar who loves spending time with his family. His motto is ‘age is just a number.’”

Rachel Solomon, VICC. “This is my mutt Blue. He might be a dog, but he loves his Kentucky Wildcats!”
Kristan Markland, 7 North Cardiology Stepdown. “This is my pup Ellie. She is a one year old Australian shepherd/ poodle mix.”
Jason Steffens, eStar Training and Delivery. “Kyra is a long-haired, 9-year-old German shepherd. She loves going on walks, getting lots of pets from as many people as she can, and as you can see, sitting outside. She just loves dressing up in her Wonder Woman outfit and defending the yard from squirrels and bunnies.”

Patricia Newberry, Renal Transplant. Teddy the long-haired German shepherd,
Molly Blanton, Liver Transplant. “Buddy is a 3-year-old German shepherd and a very good boy.”
Lauren Hill, Pediatric Primary Care Clinic. “Roscoe is a corgi-bichon mix and he just turned 4. He LOVES to play ball. He would play ball from the time he wakes up to the time he goes to bed at night and never gets tired.”
Kristina Betters, Pediatric Critical Care. “Bruce is named after Bruce Springsteen, so he also goes by ‘Bruce the Boss.’ We got him from a rescue group when he was still a puppy, so we don’t know his true breed but he seems to be mostly chocolate Lab with probably some pit bull mixed in. He was quite an anxious puppy but he has turned into a real gentle soul and an integral member of our family.”
Jinglin Li, Finance. “Hanzo is a super energetic and playful red heeler. He barks at the treadmill whenever it’s on.”
Jennifer Welch, Pediatric ED. “Moony, our mixed terrier rescue puppy. We found him when he was about 6 months old. When we got him home he ran into everything, fell down some steps, and we discovered he was blind with solid white cataracts in both eyes. My son named him Moony because of the white in his eyes. You would never know this dog is blind the way he sprints around our yard and gets around just fine in a house with four children. Animals are amazingly adaptable. We love our Moony.”
Jo Harris-Gammon, Health IT. “Sam is a rescue from Nashville Humane. He is a yellow Lab mix.”
Mandy Morgan, postdoctoral fellow, Patel lab. “Diego, my Havanese rescue. He’s 9-and-a-half years old, with a puppy’s heart.”
Suzanne Conway, Vanderbilt Eskind Diabetes Clinic. “Sophie is a 6-year-old miniature schnauzer. She loves watching TV but barks like crazy if any animals are on-screen. She also loves going for a walk and meeting new friends along the way.”
Jack Bouaphachanh, Finance. “Archie is a mini Bernedoodle.”
Betsy DeMarcus, Anesthesiology. “Knox is a 2-year-old goldendoodle. He loves swimming, treats and toys. He is petrified of small dogs and storms.”
Debi Arline, Outpatient Pharmacy. “Tanner is the most loving, loyal dog I have ever been around. I took him at 5 weeks old to give him a better life and he has made my life soooo much better.”
Sydney Traub, Finance. “Tate’s favorite activities include barking at the wind, standing patrol in the living room (i.e., sitting on top of the couch, staring out the window, and growling at the passersby), and running around at Camp Bow Wow with his other four-legged friends.”
Aaron Hart, Patient Access Services. “Grimsby the English bulldog. His favorite activities include excessive levels of snoring, drooling and chewing on stuff. He loves to wrestle and roughhouse and is a champion at demolishing small household objects. He loves kids, eating Cheetos and spends most of his days lounging around the house looking for opportunities to nap on furniture that he is not allowed to climb on. He’s the best.”

 

After all those smiling dogs, a brief rebuttal from the unimpressed feline community:

 

Stephanie Hatcher, Operations Improvement. “Prince Louie is a red tabby sphynx cat who was named after the British royal prince of the same name. He’s 1 year old and his favorite things are eating and sleeping in the crook of my arm.”
Jennifer Keen, VUMC IT. “Peachy Keen is my blue classic tabby Maine coon cat. She is 18. Her hobbies include bird, squirrel, and chipmunk watching. She likes to nap and watch animal videos.”
Shannon Hawley, VICC Clinical Trials. “Arrow has now retired at the age of 2 from the streets to a leather couch with only the view of the birds he will eventually capture outside the window. He’s a full Siamese and enjoys playing with his lovey at 3 in the morning. He eats out of fine china only and prefers Egyptian cotton over regular cotton.”
Kimberly Brennan, Radiology and Radiological Sciences. Lexie.

 

The horses get the last laugh:

Regina Jenkins, Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. “Jordy the walking horse.”
Brittani Stansell, Kidney/Pancreas Transplant. “TomTom is a 12-year-old quarter horse. He likes to barrel race and do pole bending. He has a unique personality. He loves to make noise and loves getting lots of attention.”
