At a ceremony following presentations that day, the House Staff Advisory Council presented the Grant W. Liddle Award for exemplary leadership in promotion of scientific research on the part of a faculty member to Alfred L. George Jr., M.D. George is the Grant W. Liddle Professor of Medicine and director of the Division of Genetic Medicine.
Winners were also selected for the poster sessions. They were: for Basic Sciences, Zachary A. Kistka, “Autoantigen Targeted Therapy in Type 1 Diabetes-Prong NOD Mice,” and for clinical research, Kelly Stratton, “Blood Transfusion Predicts Worse Overall Survival in Patients Undergoing Nephrectomy for Renal Cell Carcinoma.”
The Elliot V. Newman Award Winners for best projects this year included Yong I. Cha, M.D., Ph.D., in Radiation Oncology, who took the prize in the Basic Sciences category for his project entitled “Sensitivity of HPV (+) Oropharyngeal Head and Neck Cancers to Poly (ADP-ribose) Polymerase, PARP, Inhibition, Due to Defective DNA Damage Response,” and Stephen M. Tourjee, VMS-III, who won in Clinical Research for his project “The Impact of Nerve Blocks on Opioid Use and Hospital Length of Stay in Patients with Traumatic Lower-Extremity Injury.”
