Magnet update

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) appraisers will visit Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Feb. 20 to 24, 2012. A big part of the success of the site visit will be linking VUMC Nursing activities to what the ANCC calls the “Five Essential Elements” found in all Magnet organizations:

• Transformational Leadership — leaders that have a vision for the future and strategically plan to prepare for the organization to advance

• Structural Empowerment — an environment that provides a mechanism for nurses to have a voice in their daily work and professional practice

• Exemplary Professional Practice — a way to describe practice when nurses are key members on an interdisciplinary, collaborative team that works to achieve high-quality patient outcomes

• New Knowledge, Innovations & Improvements — using evidence-based practice, research and quality indicator information to make changes in nursing practice and to ensure patients receive the best health care

• Empirical Outcomes — measurable results, based on evidence, of a nursing process.
