Postdoc recruitment event set
Thirty-four graduate students from around the country will attend Vanderbilt University Medical Center's first-ever postdoctoral fellow recruitment event March 7-10.
The event coincides with the annual Postdoctoral Research and Shared Resources Symposium on March 9.
“This event was a 'must-do' charge from the recent basic science refreshing of the Research Enterprise Strategic Plan,” said Susan Wente, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for Research and senior associate dean for Biomedical Sciences.
“Postdocs are really the foundation of the research that goes on here at Vanderbilt,” added Ann Richmond, Ph.D., assistant dean of Biomedical Research, Education and Training.
According to Roger Chalkley, D.Phil., senior associate dean of Biomedical Research, Education and Training, about 500 postdocs currently work in the labs of 400 tenure-track faculty scientists at Vanderbilt. On average, 140 postdocs are recruited annually.
The aim is to increase the number of postdoctoral fellows training at Vanderbilt by inviting graduate students to visit with faculty, tour core facilities and “see all of the outstanding research that we have going on here,” Richmond said.
The candidates will meet with more than 75 faculty members, including junior faculty who will benefit from the recruitment event by obtaining exposure to prospective postdoctoral fellows.
“The collaborative effort going into hosting this event is a reflection of the value Vanderbilt faculty place on training and mentoring,” Wente said.
