Guillamondegui honored by trauma surgery association
Oscar Guillamondegui, M.D., M.P.H., recently became the first Vanderbilt faculty member to receive the Peter C. Canizaro Award, presented by the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) for best paper by a young investigator.

Guillamondegui received the award at the association's annual meeeting in Boston in September for his paper “Does hypoxia affect ICU delirium or long-term cognitive impairment following multiple trauma without intracranial hemorrhage?”
Guillamondegui, assistant professor of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, completed his Master's of Public Health degree from Vanderbilt in May.
“Oscar's expertise in traumatic brain injury, along with his studies in the MPH program, will lead to a greater understanding on the impact a strong family support network has on post-traumatic injury recovery,” said John Morris, M.D., chief of the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.
The Canizaro Award was established in 1991 to recognize the achievements of new members within the first two years of membership.
AAST is the largest organization in the U.S. addressing trauma and surgical critical care.
Members are invited to join after demonstrating their effectiveness in the discipline.
