Oates receives hypertension research award from AHA
John Oates, M.D., a Vanderbilt physician-scientist who has made major contributions to current understanding of blood pressure regulation, has been honored by the American Heart Association with one of its highest awards.
Oates, the Thomas F. Frist Professor of Medicine and professor of Pharmacology, is one of two scientists to receive the 2010 Novartis Award for Hypertension Research from the AHA’s Council for High Blood Pressure Research.
The other awardee is Paul Vanhoutte, M.D., Ph.D., a director at the Biopharmaceutical Development Centre and head of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Hong Kong.
The award, presented Oct. 15 in Washington, D.C., recognizes scientists “who have had a major impact in the field of hypertension and whose research has contributed to improved treatment and greater understanding of high blood pressure.”
Oates is founding director of Vanderbilt’s Division of Clinical Pharmacology and former chair of Medicine. Among other achievements, the award recognizes Oates’ “seminal work” defining the roles of arachidonic acid and prostaglandins in blood pressure regulation.
Oates is the third Vanderbilt faculty member to be honored by the AHA for hypertension research. The others are Tadashi Inagami, Ph.D., and Jorge Capdevila, Ph.D.
