Lessons from long COVID; a child’s song for her child life specialist; fertility issues for cancer survivors; plus other news stories with VUMC sources.

The Washington Post reporter Richard Sima interviewed Wes Ely, MD, professor of Medicine and co-director of the Center for Critical Illness, Brain Dysfunction, and Survivorship, for a story about what long COVID can teach us about future pandemics. 

East Tennessee State University’s WETS 89.5 “Vital Voices” podcast interviewed Kristen Scarpato, MD, professor of Urology, for a segment about prostate cancer.

Angela Jefferson, PhD, professor of Neurology and Medicine, was quoted in a Nashville Post item about the $25 million federal grant for the Vanderbilt Memory and Alzheimer’s Center.

William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, was quoted in a story in The Daily Mail that offers context on the severity of this year’s measles outbreak, which has sickened more than 1,000 people, killed three, and almost exclusively affects people who are unvaccinated for measles.

WTVF News Channel 5 reporter Austin Pollack did a story on Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt patient Charlotte Merryman, 7, who wrote a song for her child life specialist. Pollack interviewed Charlotte’s parents; child life specialist Alexa Jensen; and music therapist Jess Knoble.

Andreana Holowatyj, PhD, MSCI, assistant professor of Medicine, was quoted by The Scientist in a story about fertility issues for cancer survivors.

Essentially Sports featured an entry about former NBA player and hear transplant recipient Scot Pollard that mentions VUMC.
