Cornetta Long, 10, and her mother, Kelli, were all smiles after snagging Cornetta’s favorite costume during Wednesday’s Halloween Costume Shop at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. More than 1,000 costumes for patients and families were donated for this year’s event, which is hosted by Child Life.

The American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) has awarded the Bronze Level Beacon Award to the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. The award is given to nursing units that distinguish themselves by excellence and a commitment to improve patient care.

Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt broke ground Oct. 29 on a new 37,500-square-foot facility that will significantly expand pediatric specialty care, outpatient surgery and imaging services to children in Rutherford and surrounding counties.

Shari Barkin, MD, MSHS, chief of the Division of Academic General Pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, has been named Pediatrician of the Year by the Tennessee Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (TNAAP).

Earlier this year, Bruce Green rode his bike on a 3,400-mile trip from Los Angeles to Boston, raising more than $50,000 in honor of his late father, Neil E. Green, MD, former director and chief of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics.

Country music singer Walker Hayes recently visited Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, where he spent time with patients and families and performed and conducted interviews at Seacrest Studios.

Each October, as Missy Cook helps unload trailers full of bright, plump pumpkins with hundreds of volunteers, she’s reminded why the Cooper Trooper Foundation Pumpkin Patch exists — because her son, Cooper, 10, is alive after surviving a rare cancer that was found when he was just 8 weeks old.
