Twenty-four retiring faculty members were recognized during Vanderbilt’s Commencement ceremony May 13, when the university honored their years of service and bestowed on them the title of emeritus or emerita faculty.

Less than a week has passed since the reorganization that separated Vanderbilt University from Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) became effective April 29, but early signs are very positive, Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of VUMC and dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said Tuesday during his Spring Faculty Meeting and Awards Program.

Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos discussed the implementation of the university’s Academic Strategic Plan, the university and Medical Center transition to two separate legal and financial entities, groundbreaking research, and the university's examination of what community looks like at Vanderbilt in his Spring Faculty Assembly address.

Bonnie Dow, Michele Johnson and Kristy Sinkfield are among the nominees for the 2016 ATHENA Award from Nashville Cable.

President Barack Obama has named Vanderbilt researcher Christopher J. Lemons among the recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. It is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

Ten members of Vanderbilt University’s faculty have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The Faculty Senate, in partnership with Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Susan Wente and Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine Jeff Balser, will host a second town hall meeting on the VU-VUMC reorganization Friday, Oct. 30.
