Lecturer shares impact Watkins made on his life

The 19th annual Levi Watkins Jr., MD Lecture was held Oct. 6, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Watkins’ graduation from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Watkins, who was the first African American student to attend and graduate from VUSM, died in 2015.

Ceremony launches medical students’ education journey

In keeping with tradition, the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine first-year class held its White Coat Ceremony on Aug. 5. Despite a few aspects of the ceremony being altered due to physical distancing measures put in place with COVID-19, the students enjoyed the right of passage marking the beginning of their medical education journey.

Group’s efforts lead to removal of race as a variable in common test of kidney function

A group of Vanderbilt students, residents and faculty — connected through their passion for health equity — have identified and worked together to rectify longstanding concerns about the inappropriate use of race as a variable in the calculation of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which estimates a patient’s level of kidney function and helps determine the stage of kidney disease.
