Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, President and CEO of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, kicked off the Spring Faculty Meeting by providing a short update of VUSM’s academic endeavors.

At commencement ceremonies for Vanderbilt University School of Medicine graduates last week, Dean Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, relinquished his usual role as commencement speaker and bestowed it to outgoing Senior Associate Dean for Health Sciences Education, Bonnie Miller, MD, MMHC.

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine student Didi Odinkemelu is one of 14 medical students chosen for the 2019 Medical Program of the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) to participate in a two-week program in Germany and Poland this summer, which uses the conduct of physicians in Nazi-occupied Europe as a way to reflect on medical ethics today.

While Vanderbilt University School of Medicine student Jon Alverio was on rotation with the Vanderbilt Health Palliative Care team, he witnessed the confusion patients often have as they try to complete an advance directive for health care, and he decided to do something about it.

Match Day is the crowning moment of the National Resident Match Program, which matches thousands of medical students with residency programs at medical centers and hospitals across the country. On March 15, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s Match Day ceremony was one for the books.

Gerard Francisco, MD, renowned for his clinical expertise and research in the field of brain injury, stroke rehabilitation and spasticity management, will deliver the next Flexner Discovery Lecture on Thursday, March 28.
