Abramo named chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Thomas Abramo, M.D., has been named chief of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, director of the Emergency Department at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine.

"Tom Abramo brings many outstanding talents to the position as chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and the VCH Emergency Department — a wealth of experience in caring for pediatric emergency department patients, quality patient-related research, experience in training pediatric emergency physicians and great energy and passion for these roles,” said Arnold Strauss, M.D., James C. Overall Professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics and medical director of Children's Hospital.

“He will make a huge difference to our VCH patients and physicians.”

Abramo succeeds Andrea Bracikowski, M.D., who served as the director and chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine for 12 years. Bracikowski, associate professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics and assistant professor of Pediatric Orthopaedics, will continue to work in the Pediatric Emergency Department, as well as in the Pediatric Orthopaedics Clinic.

Before joining Vanderbilt, Abramo was professor and associate medical director of the Division of Emergency Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, a position he held for the past four years.

“I am looking forward to working with Dr. Abramo on the important issues confronting our active pediatric emergency department,” said Kevin Churchwell, M.D., chief of staff/associate medical director and associate director of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care at Children's Hospital.

“He brings to the table a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and an outstanding ability to problem solve, which will greatly enhance our ability to care for the children of Middle Tennessee and the surrounding counties.”

Abramo received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College. He is a member of a number of professional societies including the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics' section on Pediatric Emergency Medicine and section on Transport, Society of Critical Care Medicine, among others.

He has authored or co-authored more than two dozen peer-reviewed publications, and has published numerous chapters, articles and several abstracts.
