Agreement bolsters Madison hospital's emergency services

VUMC has struck an affiliation agreement supporting emergency medicine services of Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Madison.

Dr. Rick Belcher Jr., assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at VUMC, has been named medical director of TCMC’s emergency department.

In all, four VUMC emergency medicine attending physicians now work part-time at TCMC, covering a quarter of all ED shifts. TCMC receives around 12,000 emergency visits per year. VUMC received some 54,000 emergency visits in the most recent fiscal year.

“As with VMG’s other off-site practices, this is one more way in which Vanderbilt is expanding its role in the community,” Belcher said.

TCMC gains emergency medicine expertise while VUMC gains new relationships with consumers and community physicians. The affiliation agreement is designed to foster coordination on behalf of patients.

“To serve this population, we’ll at times want to refer patients for services at Vanderbilt,” Belcher said.

The agreement stipulates that TCMC will readily accept patient transfers back to its facility from VUH. For more information, contact Belcher at 6-1160.
