This annual award is the association's highest honor for distinguished leadership.

APM, founded by Robert H. Williams in 1954, is an organization of departments of internal medicine represented by chairs and appointed leaders at medical schools and affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada.

Williams was a chief medical resident at Vanderbilt in 1938. Grant Liddle, M.D., former chair of Medicine at Vanderbilt, received this award in 1988.
“It is a great honor to be in distinguished company and wonderful recognition for a superb department of medicine,” Neilson said.
