Bill Gates Foundation official set to speak

Tadataka (Tachi) Yamada, M.D., president of the Global Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will address “Perspectives on Global Health” at the next Discovery Lecture. The lecture will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 26, in 208 Light Hall.

Yamada leads the foundation's efforts to help develop and deliver low-cost, life-saving tools to address health concerns of the developing world, such as tuberculosis, HIV, malaria, malnutrition and maternal and child health.

Before joining the foundation, Yamada served as chair of Research and Development and on the board of directors at GlaxoSmithKline. Prior to that, he served as chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and physician-in-chief at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

Yamada is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Medical Sciences in the United Kingdom.

The lecture is sponsored by the Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine.
