Monroe Carell Jr. has received the 2004 Tennessee Hospital Association (THA) meritorious service award for philanthropist/volunteer. This statewide award recognizes leadership and service by individuals in support of hospitals through volunteer work and philanthropy.

THA made the decision to offer this first of its kind award in this category because of the fund-raising efforts Carell has made to benefit the new Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, named for him.

Carell was honored at the THA annual meeting Oct. 1, at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel. Jim Shmerling, president and CEO of the Children's Hospital presented the award to Carell.
