Celebration honors new endowed chair holders at Vanderbilt

Celebration honors new endowed chair holders at Vanderbilt

Thirteen Vanderbilt University faculty members named this year to endowed chairs in the School of Medicine and College of Arts and Science were honored Tuesday for outstanding academic achievements.

The ceremony at the Student Life Center was the third in a series of celebrations that will be held in 2011 to recognize new chair holders.

“The members of the faculty we recognize today — to a person — have accomplished extraordinary things in their careers,” said Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D., vice chancellor for Health Affairs and dean of the School of Medicine.

“They are the best of the best.”

Balser introduced seven new chair holders in the School of Medicine. They are:

• Ellen Wright Clayton, M.D., J.D., Craig-Weaver Chair in Pediatrics;

• Kathryn Edwards, M.D., Sarah H. Sell and Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair;

• Kathleen Gould, Ph.D., Louise B. McGavock Chair;

• Jacek Hawiger, M.D., Ph.D., Louise B. McGavock Chair;

• Mark Magnuson, M.D., Louise B. McGavock Chair;

• Randolph Miller, M.D., Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair; and

• Karoly Mirnics, M.D., James G. Blakemore Chair in Psychiatry.

Richard McCarty, Ph.D., Provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, introduced six new chair holders in the College of Arts and Science. They are:

• William Caferro, Ph.D., Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Chair in History;

• Lynn Enterline, Ph.D., Nancy Perot Mulford Chair in English;

• Carl Johnson, Ph.D., Stevenson Chair in Biological Sciences;

• Jane Landers, Ph.D., Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Chair in History;

• William Luis, Ph.D., Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Chair in Spanish; and

• James Patton, Ph.D., Stevenson Chair in Biological Sciences.
