Crowe honored at national pediatric meet

James Crowe, M.D., director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center and Professor of Pediatrics, Microbiology and Immunology, has been elected to the American Pediatric Societies (APS) and will receive the Norman J. Siegel new member Outstanding Science Award.
He will also deliver the Presidential Plenary for APS on Sunday, May 2, in Vancouver, B.C. The talk will be entitled: "Learning to hold on tight: Human antibody repertoires through the stages of life."
“This award reflects 15 years of work at Vanderbilt from a group that has been made up of more than 100 pediatricians and microbiologists over time,” Crowe said. “I feel very lucky to have worked with such a talented group of individuals. This is a way to recognize our Department of Pediatrics as one of the top pediatric research institutions in the world."
Jonathan Gitlin, M.D., James C. Overall Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, nominated Crowe for the special recognition. Gitlin said the award reflects the qualities of Norman Siegel, M.D., a teacher and scientist who nurtured the early careers of numerous postdoctoral fellows and pediatric residents.
“Jim is the ideal recipient who embodies the principles of excellence in scholarship and complete commitment to pediatrics that were so much a part of Norm Siegel’s career. I am delighted that Jim will receive the award,” Gitlin said.
Membership in the APS is considered a significant milestone in the career of a pediatric scientist. William O. Cooper, M.D., M.P.H., professor of Pediatric and Preventive Medicine, was also elected into the APS this year.
Dozens of Vanderbilt Pediatric faculty and researchers will have poster presentations and talks at the larger PAS meeting.
