Deshpande takes new role at VCH

Jayant Deshpande, M.D., has been named anesthesiologist-in-chief at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

In the new role, Deshpande will work as part of the perioperative leadership team to ensure delivery of high quality, efficient care to patients.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Jay's reputation in pediatric anesthesiology and critical care to oversee these important programs in Children's Hospital,” said Michael Higgins, M.D., chair of Anesthesiology and anesthesiologist-in-chief at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Deshpande, who joined Vanderbilt in 1991, is a professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics and vice chair of Pediatric Anesthesio-logy.

“The leadership of Dr. Deshpande, Dr. Higgins, the director of Pediatric Anesthesia, Dr. [Ira] Landsman, and the director of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia, Dr. [Brian] Donahue, will help VCH continue to grow and provide the important services we need as we continue to develop as one of the best children's hospitals in the nation,” said Kevin Churchwell, M.D., interim chief executive officer of Children's Hospital.

Deshpande earned his undergraduate degree from Boston University and received his medical degree from theUniversity of Tennessee. He also earned a Master's of Public Health from Vanderbilt.

He completed his pediatric residency at LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis and an anesthesia residency and fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

He has authored or co-authored more than 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals, has written more than two dozen chapters in medical books and has co-edited editions of “The Pediatric Pain Handbook” and “Pediatric Pain Management for Primary Care.”

Deshpande is currently the president of the Society of Pediatric Anesthesiology.
