Elaine Fuchs, Ph.D., a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at The Rockefeller University, is the next featured speaker in the Discovery Lecture Series.

She will discuss “Stem Cells and Their Lineages in Skin” on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall. A reception in the Light Hall lobby will follow the lecture, which is free and open to the public.

Fuchs, the Rebecca C. Lancefield Professor of Mammalian Cell Biology and Development, and her colleagues focus on the biology of skin stem cells. The investigators are studying how skin stem cells give rise to two very distinct structures — the skin itself (epidermis) and hair follicles.

Through these studies, Fuchs and her colleagues have uncovered the genetic basis of blistering skin diseases and clues to the way skin cancers and inflammatory skin disorders develop.
