Events on tap for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center announces its schedule of educational events for October, in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

• Oct. 12 — As part of Vanderbilt-Ingram’s ongoing “Cancer Answer Series,” representatives of the Family Cancer Risk Service will discuss hereditary risks associated with breast cancer. Speakers will be Susie Caro, a nurse practitioner and director of the service, and Selvi Palaniappan, a genetic counselor. • Oct. 19 — Cancer Answer Evenings will continue with “The ABCs of HRT,” a discussion by Anne Moore, Ph.D, of the School of Nursing about hormone replacement therapy and its risks and benefits. • Oct. 26 — Cancer Answer Evenings will continue with “Breast Cancer: At the Leading Edge of Research and Treatment,” by Carlos Arteaga, M.D., Ingram Professor of Cancer Research. Arteaga is the director of Vanderbilt-Ingram’s Specialized Program of Research Excellence in Breast Cancer, designated and supported by the National Cancer Institute. Parking is free and refreshments will be served at each Cancer Answer Evening presentation.

• Oct. 28 — Vanderbilt-Ingram will host its 12th annual Women’s Health Forum Luncheon and Fashion Show, featuring fashions from Talbots and Talbots Woman modeled by breast cancer survivors.

Speaker at the event will be Karen Eubanks Jackson, president and founder of Sisters Network, the nation’s first African-American cancer survivors organization. Jackson will receive the Frances Williams Preston Award for Breast Cancer Awareness.

The event at the Loews Vanderbilt Plaza will include information booths from various cancer-related organizations, which will open at noon. The program will begin at 12:30 p.m.

• Oct. 26-29 — “Check Your Insides Out” at Cool Springs Galleria. This educational exhibit includes interactive learning stations about skin, oral, breast, prostate, lung and colorectal cancers — including a 20-foot-long, 8-foot-high, walk-through colon. The exhibit by the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation is on a 13-city tour, with its Nashville stop sponsored by Vanderbilt-Ingram. For more information, visit www.preventcancer/cyio.
