Heidi A. Smith, M.D., a fellow in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, has been awarded the 2005 Society for Pediatric Research Fellow (Clinical) Research Award for her abstract entitled, "Nitric Oxide Precursors and Congenital Heart Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Citrulline.”
Smith's abstract was chosen as one of the three best out of thousands of applicants.
The award is designed to encourage pediatricians in training to pursue careers in academic medicine by recognizing their current research accomplishments.
Smith will present her study at the Pediatric Academic Society's annual meeting May 16, in Washington, D.C. The meeting will focus on presentation of new disease pathophysiologies, diagnostic tools, treatment regimens and updates on current trends in the pediatric medical/research community.
Smith received her medical degree from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. Upon completion of her critical care fellowship in June, Smith will join the faculty at Children's Hospital as an assistant professor of Pediatric Critical Care and Anesthesia.
