Former faculty member Nunn indicted on assault charges

Dr. Craig Nunn, a former faculty member, was indicted last week on charges that he assaulted several children at Vanderbilt University Hospital.

The charges, handed down by a Nashville grand jury in a nine-count indictment, range from rape of a minor to aggravated assault. The alleged incidents all occurred in VUH. The indictments follow a three-and-a-half month investigation conducted by Metro Police and Vanderbilt Security.

The first of the reported incidents occurred last December. Hospital staff quickly called in Vanderbilt Security, Metro Police and Child Protective Services. Staff and patient families were alerted to be vigilant about who was on the unit and who was visiting their rooms. Numerous security enhancements were implemented which remain in place today. These enhancements helped lead to the arrest of Nunn, a trauma surgeon.

As soon as his identity was known, Nunn¹s privileges were immediately suspended and his employment was terminated. All appropriate physician licensing and information authorities have been notified.

Questions and concerns raised by patients should be directed to the Office of Patient Affairs at 322-6154.
