Free cancer screening May 1

On Friday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Vanderbilt Medical Center physicians will hold a Head and Neck Cancer Screening Day, providing cancer screenings for anyone concerned about their risk.

The event is open to the public and is part of Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, in conjunction with the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance.

Screenings will be held at two locations: Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center, Odess Head and Neck Surgery Clinic, 7209 Medical Center East, South Tower; and Surgical Clinic Number One, first floor ENT Clinic, VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, 1310 24th Ave. South.

Cancers of the head and neck are a growing health threat. As a group, they are the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

Typical symptoms include a lump or sore in the mouth or throat that does not heal, persistent sore throat, change or hoarseness in the voice and difficulty swallowing.
