Furman joins Anesthesiology leadership team

William Furman, M.D., has joined Vanderbilt’s Department of Anesthesiology in the new role of vice-chair for Clinical Affairs.

Furman will oversee the department’s clinical program planning and operations management. He will also work with the OR leadership on program planning, facility management and quality initiatives.

“Bill brings with him a wealth of experience in operations management and is involved in quality and safety programs at the national level.” said Michael Higgins, M.D., chair of Anesthesiology. “Bill’s oversight of our clinical programs will help us sustain the highest level of service to our patients and surgeons as we continue to grow in the future.”

Furman comes to Vanderbilt from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was senior associate chief of staff and professor of Anesthesiology. Furman received his medical training at Cornell University Medical College and completed residencies in Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

He also completed a fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at Hopkins and has served on the faculties of Johns Hopkins University and the University of Chicago.

Furman currently serves on the American Society of Anesthesiologists Committee on Liver Transplantation and will begin a term as chair of the Subcommittee on Quality Improvement and Practice Management in October. He was recently inducted into the Association of University Anesthesiologists.
