Global surgical care meet set
Experts in surgical care from around the world will speak at Vanderbilt University next week during the third annual meeting of the Global Burden of Surgical Disease Working Group.
Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D., will open the meeting following a 6 p.m. dinner March 10 at the Vanderbilt Student Life Center with a talk entitled, “Lessons Learned in Haiti: Using Crisis to Highlight Surgical Need.”
The Global Burden of Surgical Disease Working Group was formed in 2007 to help address the relative lack of surgical care in low- and middle-income countries, which contributes to higher rates of premature death and disability.
Vanderbilt faculty members have been involved with the group since its first meeting. Several of them will speak during two days of meetings and workshops March 11-12 at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.
Vanderbilt speakers include Mark Newton, M.D., director of Vanderbilt International Anesthesiology; Andy Norman, M.D., assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and John Tarpley, M.D., professor of Surgery and Anesthesiology.
