Guy to direct content for critical care podcast series

Jeff Guy, M.D., director of the Vanderbilt Regional Burn Center, has been named editor of iCritical Care Podcasts, a web syndication of Critical Care Medicine, the journal of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM).

Guy will develop content for the podcasts and discuss current topics in adult and pediatric critical care with researchers, authors and policy leaders in critical care medicine around the world.

“Podcasting has greatly changed when and how people consume medical information, and it is growing rapidly,” Guy said. “Medical providers at all levels are feeling the conflict between an explosion of information and less time to consume and process it.”

In addition to this new post, Guy will continue his personal podcast, “ICU Rounds,” which will become a production of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. His podcast is frequented by physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and pre-hospital providers with topics selected based on items discussed in the Vanderbilt Burn Center.

Guy has produced podcasts for five years, which are available for free download on iTunes and at http://icurounds.com/. His current podcast is ranked in the top three medical podcasts on Apple iTunes’ top charts, with more than 4 million downloads from 173 countries.

“With limitations on resident work hours, we as faculty have less time to spend with students to teach using traditional face-to-face methods,” Guy said. “Podcasting allows people to make better use of their time, enabling them to learn while commuting, working out or even putting their children to bed. The feedback from students and providers has been tremendous.

“I am very excited about combining efforts with the SCCM to continue to expand this method of medical education to larger numbers of people.”
