The Vanderbilt HIV Vaccine Program will sponsor a series of events this month to highlight the need for a vaccine to prevent the spread of the AIDS-causing human immunodeficiency virus.

The events, held in conjunction with national HIV Vaccine Awareness Day on Tuesday, May 18, acknowledge the contributions of thousands of study volunteers, scientists and health care professionals who are committed to finding a safe and effective vaccine.

Information about HIV vaccine research and the Vanderbilt HIV Vaccine Program will be provided at the following events in Nashville:

•“A Night at the Ballpark” with the Nashville Sounds, 7 p.m. Thursday, at Greer Stadium, 534 Chestnut St. •A community potluck and ice cream social, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 16, at Two Rivers Park, near the corner of McGavock Pike and Two Rivers Parkway (follow the signs)

•A screening and discussion of “A Closer Walk,” a film about AIDS in the world, 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at the Belcourt Theatre, 2102 Belcourt Ave.
