Holiday Card winners give back to VUMC

When twins Jacob and Jonathan Vaughn were born, parents Greg and Marsha learned that the boys had heart defects that would require immediate attention. The two were transported to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where Dr. Walter Merrill, professor of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, performed a series of surgeries to correct the defects.

Twelve years later, the two are not only happy and healthy Dickson Middle School students, they are also budding artists and two of the winners of this year’s annual VCH Holiday Card contest.

Each year, VCH and Friends of Children’s Hospital sponsor an art contest that encourages both former and current VCH patients to design holiday cards and gift tags that will be sold to individuals and corporations, both through the VCH development office and local bookstores. Over the years, the holiday card project has become not only a tradition, but also a significant fund-raising effort that benefits the hospital.

Other 2002 winners include: Amanda Kay Dunbar, 16, Maryville, Tenn.; Annie Lamz, 8, Monteagle, Tenn.; Nathan DeWitt, 11, Nashville; and Conner Hunley, 7, Goodlettsville.
