VUSN Dean Colleen Conway-Welch, Ph.D., left, and faculty, staff and community members recently honored Inez Bramley, center. She was an L.P.N. who was originally denied admission into Vanderbilt in 1960, but was admitted five years later as one of the school's first African-American students. Although her VUSN education was cut short due to a family emergency, she eventually finished her education at Tennessee State University and became a registered nurse serving throughout the Nashville health care community for more than 30 years. In honor of Bramley's dedication and perseverance, VUSN has named an annual minority scholarship in her name.
