Kolata set for Nov. 3 Discovery Lecture

The New York Times

Her talk – “Discovering science stories: What makes them news?” – will begin at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall.

Kolata has twice been named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize – in 2000 for investigative reporting about clinical trials, and in 2010 for explanatory journalism about the 40-year war on cancer.

She also is the author of several books, including “Rethinking Thin: the New Science of Weight Loss and the Myths and Realities of Dieting,” published in 2007.

Kolata studied molecular biology as a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received a master’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of Maryland.

Prior to joining The New York Times in 1987, she wrote for Science magazine.

Kolata’s talk, rescheduled from January, is sponsored by the office of the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs.
