Magnet ‘journey’ extended

This week, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and Magnet appraisers requested additional information from Vanderbilt University Medical Center Nursing, extending the second Magnet designation process by several months.

VUMC has six months to answer their questions and show improvement in some trended quality data. The ANCC and Magnet appraisers will re-evaluate only the new material since the rest of the Magnet document has been accepted.

“I am confident that VUMC Nursing will continue to shine as this process continues,” said Marilyn Dubree, M.S.N., R.N., executive chief nursing officer. “Other organizations have received similar requests due to the ANCC's new standards, and this is just a small part of a comprehensive document that demonstrates the excellence of VUMC Nursing.”

The plan is for VUMC Nursing to submit the additional information by Sept. 1. The ANCC and Magnet appraisers will review this information and determine if the Medical Center will receive a site visit.

“We need to look at this as an opportunity by using this extra time to better prepare for a potential site visit,” Dubree said. “Everyone is working hard, we need to keep up and even build on that momentum during the next several months.”
