Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Magnet Recognition site visit is under way.

A team of four appraisers and one fellow from the American Nurses Credentialing Center arrived Wednesday and will tour various units and interviewing staff members in an effort to learn about VUMC nursing from the inside out.

Teams of nurse escorts, unit managers and staff nurses have been working all hours to ensure the visit goes off with precision and that appraisers have a chance to get input from as many people as possible.

“The visit has gotten off to a great start,” said Sabrina Downs, M.S.N., R.N., director, Magnet Recognition. “Everyone has done such hard work in getting us to this point. This has truly been our chance to shine and we're looking forward to a strong finish tomorrow.”

The four-day visit will conclude Saturday afternoon. This is the final step in the process to earn Magnet Recognition, a seal of approval by the ANCC for hospitals that meet high standards in 14 key areas.

Only 4 percent of hospitals in the country have achieved Magnet Recognition.
